A leading candidate in Brazil (https://abcnews.go.com/alerts/Brazil) 's presidential election (https://abcnews.go.com/alerts/Elections) said police should be given license to kill criminals and those who do should receive medals not face prosecution.
Hard-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro said in an interview Tuesday night that he would "leave good people out of range of the shooting" and go at criminals full steam.
"This kind of people (criminals), you cannot treat them as if they were normal human beings, ok? We can't let policemen keep dying at the hands of those guys," Bolsonaro said on TV Globo's main nightly news program. ""If he kills 10, 15 or 20 with 10 or 30 bullets each, he needs to get a medal and not be prosecuted."
Bolsonaro is polling second ahead of Brazil's October presidential election, with jailed former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the lead. But da Silva is likely to be barred from running by electoral authorities for a corruption conviction.
Bolsonaro has a history of controversial comments. He has defended Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship and made comments opponents have called homophobic and racist.
Political analysts say his get-tough-on-criminals rhetoric appeals to many Brazilians weary of rampant crime but could backfire.
"His adversaries might use that quote saying he will kill people using many bullets. He is saying you can fight violence with more violence, and average Brazilians don't agree with that," said political science writer Alberto Almeida.
Human rights groups say police killings of suspects in Brazil are already common.
Earlier this month a report showed a record 63,880 people were slain in Brazil last year. Brazil has long been the world leader in overall homicide numbers, and its homicide rate is also one of the highest.
On Wednesday, Bolsonaro told supporters in southern Brazil that if elected he would change legislation to treat landless activists that trespass on private property as terrorists.
Left-leaning candidate Ciro Gomes, who has about 10 percent support in the polls, called Bolsonaro "a little project of a tropical little Hitler."
WHO IS PAULO GUEDES – THE MAN BEHIND BOLSONARO
by Alex Solnik http://www.brasil247.com (http://www.brasil247.com/) 24 de Agosto de 2018
Paulo Guedes is not only the Ipiranga de Bolsonaro Post for economic affairs. It is the Ipiranga Post for all matters. Mostly politicians. Paulo Guedes is the ideologue of the far right candidate. And he is not alone in this endeavor. It would be crazy and crazy he is not. They are not alone with the hand in his pocket, he and Bolsonaro and those children and the small PSL. It's not Brancaleone's Army. The PSL is just a detail. A screen.
The great party that is behind Bolsonaro is the Millenium Institute, of which Guedes is one of the founders. A kind of DIP without a New State. A kind of Ministry of Propaganda of the Right waiting for a government. And whose goal is to impose an ultraliberal agenda on Brazil.
Financed by major communications companies such as Globo, Abril, Estadão, Folha, financial corporations and banks, Millenium has since 2009 used all means of propaganda at its disposal to demonize the left, especially the PT and make the right more palatable. Through articles, columns, lectures and consumer products like caps and T-shirts with inscriptions detonating left symbols such as Che Guevara. And it has been successful.
Millenium is your true Ipiranga Post.
The Institute functions as an aggregator of dozens of other institutes and blogs – MBL, Vempra Rua – all with the same ultraliberal orientation, as the Mises Institute, presided over by the owner of the real Ipiranga Post (or better, the Ipiranga Group), Helio Beltrão Filho, whose headquarters are in the United States and who is also director of Millenium.
Hundreds of journalists – columnists, reporters, writers – are embracing Millenium's values and ideas on the right, aimed at reaching young people. The list is huge. He goes from Nelson Motta to José Nêumane Pinto. Being right was shameful, now it's chic. There were no young people on the right, now there are many.
Behind Paulo Guedes there is a strong structure, based on international capitals linked to multiple interests – the same one that in 2013 almost toppled President Dilma putting more than 1 million people on the streets against it – capitals that are eager to buy the Brazilian state-owned in the bowl of souls.
Bolsonaro has been prepared by Millenium many years ago to be the first presumed far-right president of the country, with the main mission of "keeping order".
Millennium funders, supporters, and supporters need someone to ensure order because their agenda is explosive. Implemented, it will inevitably provoke reactions from the population that will have to be stifled by force.
They plan to sell all Brazilian state-owned companies, as Guedes confirmed in yesterday's Globo News interview. All the national patrimony, with which it intends to raise 1 trillion to put down the debt of 3 trillion. This will create huge unemployment and predictable waves of protest. The state has 500,000 employees. Everyone will be fired by the new owners. Imagine the chaos.
They want to end free public education in universities. This will not be accepted by students without protest. More confusion. They want to impose a reform of the murderous welfare of the future. More protests. Continue with the ceiling of public spending. With the labor reform as it is. They want to end the compulsory expenditure of the national budget, such as education and health. They will dehydrate the funds from social programs.
Bolsonaro is not a candidate for himself or for the small party that shelters him, he is at the service of an agenda of total squandering of all the infrastructure built by the Brazilians since Getúlio.
And it will employ all the repression necessary to fulfill it if it comes to power.
